Price

$7,500-$8,500 for instruments delivered through December 2008. Exact price depends on the cost of wood and other components used.

Ordering

Given the time available, I expect to complete two mandolins every four months. No deposit is required.

Body Style

Since beginning to build again, I have focused exclusively on F-models. However, beginning in 2008, I expect to produce a limited number of A-models—probably in the $4,000-$5,000 price range.

Wood, Ornamentation, and Finish

Top: Red Spruce, Engelmann Spruce, or European Spruce.

Back, Rim, & Neck: Sugar Maple or Red Maple. I may be fortunate enough in the near future to obtain a limited supply of recycled Brazilian rosewood.

Inlay: Abalone fern or flowerpot. I would consider recreating some of the original patterns used in the past, or others.

Binding: Triple bound ivoroid-black-ivoroid, top and/or side.

Finish: Traditional shading; natural resin varnish.

Hardware

Most people have preferences when it comes to tuners, bridges, tailpieces, pickguards, and cases. Though these components are important for playability, security, and to a limited extent, sound, they rarely define the underlying quality of an instrument. In many respects, they are (or can be) after-market choices.

Rather than be a reseller of numerous hardware options, I prefer to concentrate on building. With that said, I will do my best to meet customers’ needs. Following are standard options:

Tuners: Silver-Plated Waverly or Nickel-plated Stewart-MacDonald Elite (Pearloid or Ivoroid)

Tailpiece: Bill James silver-plated (engraved with “Miller”) or traditional Gibson-style (no engraving).

Pickguard: None.

Case: Whatever ensures safe shipment at a reasonable cost.
